Who it's for
- Grad students and researchers who upload multiple papers and reports to check what they say about topic X with exact source citations.
- Teachers who want to upload lesson materials or textbook PDFs to create student quizzes and summaries. It stays strictly within the uploaded content, reducing the risk of random answers.
- Anyone who lacks time to read long documents and wants to listen to an Audio Overview first.
Drawbacks
- The name changed from NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook in 2026. Searching for the old name may bring up outdated guides.
- You must upload files to use it, and the free plan limits the number of notebooks, sources, and daily queries.
- For PDFs with many tables and images, it often reads only the body text, so do not expect graph analysis. Scanned image PDFs might not be recognized.
Getting started
- Log in with your Google account and create a "New Notebook".
- Click Add Source to upload PDFs, text, YouTube links, or web URLs. You can add multiple sources at once.
- Ask a question in the chat panel on the right. Click a citation number in the answer to jump to the exact sentence in your source.
- Generate an "Audio Overview" at the top to create a podcast where two hosts discuss your materials.
- Save helpful answers by clicking "Save to note" and organize notes together later. Share your notebook to let others query the same materials.
