Who it's for

  • Users who want to generate unlimited images on their PC with no internet connection. It costs nothing as long as you have a capable GPU.
  • Creators who want to train custom models for specific art styles or characters. Rich resources for fine-tuning (LoRA) are available.
  • Institutions and enterprises that need to generate images in secure environments where data cannot leave the premises.

Drawbacks

  • Installation and setup are difficult. If your GPU specs are too low, generating a single image can take several minutes or fail completely.
  • Prompts must be written in detailed English, and out-of-the-box quality is inferior to Midjourney.
  • Licenses differ by version, so you must check commercial use terms yourself.

Getting started

  1. To try it without installation, first test similar models on web services like Krea or Leonardo.
  2. To run it locally, download and install a tool like ComfyUI or Automatic1111. A GPU with at least 8GB of VRAM is recommended.
  3. Download model files (checkpoints) and place them in the designated folder.
  4. Enter your English prompt and negative prompts, then generate the image.
  5. Add LoRA files if you want a specific style. Check the license before using images commercially.

Similar tools

  • FLUX Free plan FLUX is also open-source and widely praised for better recent quality, but Stable Diffusion has vastly more resources and extensions.
  • Leonardo.Ai Free plan Leonardo lets you easily use similar models on the web without any local installation.
  • Krea Free plan Krea generates results in real time as you draw, making it easier for beginners.
