Who it's for

  • People who already use Google Search. You just switch to the AI Mode tab in the search box, and no sign-up is needed
  • People who want a one-shot answer to questions that would otherwise take several pages — "what's the difference between these two products?"
  • People who want to carry on into maps, shopping, and image search. Regular search results follow right below the answer

Drawbacks

  • The answer is a summary of web pages, so it can differ from the original or mix in outdated information. Open the source links to check
  • Features roll out gradually by country and account, so some may not appear yet
  • For chatbot features like saving conversations and managing projects, the Gemini app is better

Getting started

  1. Enter a question in Google Search and press the "AI Mode" tab at the top of the results. In the Google app it's the button next to the search box.
  2. Press the link cards in the answer to check the evidence.
  3. Follow up with something like "which of those is cheapest?"
  4. Upload a photo and ask "what is this?", or upload a PDF and ask about it.
  5. Sign in with a Google account and your conversation history is kept.
