Who it's for
- People who already use Google Search. You just switch to the AI Mode tab in the search box, and no sign-up is needed
- People who want a one-shot answer to questions that would otherwise take several pages — "what's the difference between these two products?"
- People who want to carry on into maps, shopping, and image search. Regular search results follow right below the answer
Drawbacks
- The answer is a summary of web pages, so it can differ from the original or mix in outdated information. Open the source links to check
- Features roll out gradually by country and account, so some may not appear yet
- For chatbot features like saving conversations and managing projects, the Gemini app is better
Getting started
- Enter a question in Google Search and press the "AI Mode" tab at the top of the results. In the Google app it's the button next to the search box.
- Press the link cards in the answer to check the evidence.
- Follow up with something like "which of those is cheapest?"
- Upload a photo and ask "what is this?", or upload a PDF and ask about it.
- Sign in with a Google account and your conversation history is kept.
