Who it's for
- People on a Windows PC and the Edge browser. Call it from the taskbar button or the sidebar to summarize or ask about the web page you're looking at
- People who want to try free answers mixed with web search, plus image generation, without signing up
- Office workers handling documents. If your company has adopted M365 Copilot, you use the same AI inside Word and Excel
Drawbacks
- At busy times free users are limited on the top model, so answers get slower or simpler
- Many people find it weaker than ChatGPT and Claude at holding conversation context, so another tool suits long work better
- The product name changes often (Bing Chat, then Copilot, then the Copilot app) and personal and work versions are mixed together, so it's easy to lose track of which one you're using
Getting started
- Open the official site, the Copilot app in Windows, or the Edge sidebar. You get a few questions without logging in.
- Sign in with a Microsoft account to save conversations and raise your limits.
- Ask a question, or ask about the page in front of you — "summarize this page".
- Make images with "draw me a picture of...". Past the daily fast-generation count it slows down.
- On a work account, the Copilot buttons in Word, Excel, and Teams turn on according to your M365 Copilot license.
